Webinar : Laurent Mottron on the need for radical change in autism research from Spectrum on Vimeo.

On 31 August, 2021, Laurent Mottron, professor of psychiatry at the University of Montreal in Canada, discussed his June 2021 commentary in Autism Research on why we need “a radical change in our autism research strategy.” He says that because autism diagnosis is based on “vague criteria,” studies currently use participants who may share only a “trivial resemblance” to one another, which may lead to inaccurate study results. Experienced clinicians should choose research participants who are “more representative of the ‘prototype’ of autism,” Mottron says.

“My research group explores how autistic people process information. We are therefore interested in describing the perceptual, memory and reasoning mechanisms by which autistic people perceive the world, construct representations and manipulate them. Our ultimate goal is to facilitate the integration of autistic people into society whatever their age, whilst respecting their differences.”
